NEWS - Fish do not feel pain

Scientists have discovered that fish do not feel pain as they do not have a brain system or enough sensory receptors in the nerve cells to experience suffering.
Fish do not even suffer when they are hooked and fighting for their lives, according to research by an international team.
While fish may struggle to get free, scientists say this does not mean they are in pain. Instead, they show "little effect" from injuries and toxins that would leave humans in agony, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
In their experiments, researchers inserted needles into the jaws of rainbow trout.
"In spite of large injections of acid or bee venom, that would cause severe pain to a human, the trout showed remarkably little effect," Jim Rose, professor of zoology and physiology at the University of Wisconsin, who led the project, said.
Fish also resumed normal activity within minutes of surgical procedures, as well as after being caught and released back into the water.
"It is highly improbable that fish can experience pain," Rose said.
"We are not diminishing the importance of welfare considerations for fish, but we do reject the view that mental welfare is a legitimate concern," Rose added.
However, some believe while fish may not scream out, they still react to painful stimuli.
"Fish don't scream in pain but they exhibit other pronounced reactions to painful stimuli. To claim otherwise is as sound as arguing the Earth is flat," Ben Williamson, spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said.

HEALTH - `Pear-shaped bodies healthier than apples` myth busted

`Pear-shaped bodies healthier than apples` myth busted

Washington: Researchers, including one of Indian origin, have provided further evidence that the protective benefits of having a pear-body shape may be more myth than reality.

People who are "apple-shaped" - with fat more concentrated around the abdomen - have long been considered more at risk for conditions such as heart disease and diabetes than those who are "pear-shaped" and carry weight more in the buttocks, hips and thighs.

The new study conducted at UC Davis Health System found that fat stored in the buttock area - also known as gluteal adipose tissue - secretes abnormal levels of chemerin and omentin-1, proteins that can lead to inflammation and a prediabetic condition know as insulin resistance in individuals with early metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of risk factors that occur together, doubling the risk for heart disease and increasing the risk for diabetes at least five-fold.

Risk factors include having a large waistline, low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), or "good" cholesterol, high blood pressure as well as high fasting blood sugar ( insulin resistance) and high triglyceride levels.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, metabolic syndrome affects 35 percent of American adults over age 20.

"Fat in the abdomen has long been considered the most detrimental to health, and gluteal fat was thought to protect against diabetes, heart disease and metabolic syndrome," Ishwarlal Jialal, lead author of the study, said.

"But our research helps to dispel the myth that gluteal fat is `innocent.` It also suggests that abnormal protein levels may be an early indicator to identify those at risk for developing metabolic syndrome," Jialal said.

The UC Davis team found that in individuals with early metabolic syndrome, gluteal fat secreted elevated levels of chemerin and low levels of omentin-1 - proteins that correlate with other factors known to increase the risk for heart disease and diabetes.
High chemerin levels, for example, correlated with high blood pressure, elevated levels of C-reactive protein and triglycerides, insulin resistance, and low levels of HDL cholesterol. Low omentin-1 levels correlated with high levels of triglycerides and blood glucose levels and low levels of HDL cholesterol.

"High chemerin levels correlated with four of the five characteristics of metabolic syndrome and may be a promising biomarker for metabolic syndrome," Jialal said.

"As it`s also an indicator of inflammation and insulin resistance, it could also emerge as part of a biomarker panel to define high-risk obesity states. The good news is that with weight loss, you can reduce chemerin levels along with the risk for metabolic syndrome," he said.

To conduct the study, Jialal and colleagues recruited 45 patients with early metabolic syndrome - defined as having at least three risk factors for metabolic syndrome including central obesity, hypertension, mild increases in glucose levels not yet in the diabetic range, hyperlipidemia without cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

A control group of 30 subjects had less than two risk factors for metabolic syndrome, with normal glucose and triglyceride levels. Both groups were matched for gender and age.

Complete blood counts, lipid profiles and blood glucose, blood pressure and C-reactive protein levels were measured in all participants. Levels of four proteins secreted by adipose tissue - chemerin, resistin, visfatin and omentin-1 - were also measured in plasma and in subcutaneous fat samples from gluteal tissue.

The researchers found that chemerin levels were increased and omentin-1 levels were decreased in both plasma and gluteal fat of subjects with metabolic syndrome compared to those in the control group. The abnormal levels of these two proteins were also independent of age, body mass index and waist circumference.

The study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

MOBILE - First impressions Nokia Lumia 920: The camera is bang on

Nokia has just launched its flagship devices, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, in India. The Lumia 920 will cost Rs 38,199 while the Lumia 820 will cost Rs 27,559. Both these phones will be available in stores from tomorrow. The Lumia 620 was also showcased at the Mumbai launch, however the device will hit the stores in February and the price for this was not revealed.
Key features of the Nokia Lumia 920 include a curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU with 1 GB RAM, 32 GB disk space and 7 GB storage in the cloud with SkyDrive for users.
Nokia also promises a bigger 2,000mAh battery which is expected to last 10 hours with 3G. The Lumia 920 has NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8.7 megapixel rear PureView camera with HD video. The phone also has “Super Sensitive Touch,” which will let users handle their smartphone even while wearing gloves.
Firstpost got a chance to play with the Nokia Lumia 920 at the launch and here’s a quick look at some of the first impressions.
Camera: The biggest positive first. The Nokia Lumia 920 has it bang on. This is significant given the importance of pictures in the mobile market. From Facebook’s Poke app to Instagram, smartphone users are using their phones heavily to take and share pictures.
The Nokia Lumia 920′s camera takes blur-free images even when it’s dark and there is no flash on. Check out the differences between two images below. The first one we took with a Samsung Android Galaxy S phone (which doesn’t have a flash) and the second with the Nokia Lumia 920 (flash off).
Granted the Samsung has a 5 megapixel resolution but in terms of brightening up the pictures, the Nokia device is miles ahead and remember, this picture has been taken without flash. The PureView camera will definitely appeal to those who love to whip out their smartphone and click regardless of the light.
On the left hand side is a picture taken from a Samsung Galaxy S phone while on the other hand is the Nokia Lumia 920. Both images are without flash.
The only question is whether the camera’s 8.7 megapixels really makes a difference in an age where Instagram and other photoediting apps rule the world and people want to add effects like blur, black and white etc.
Optical Image stablisation: Even while recording videos with a shaky hand, this feature was also pretty impressive. Comparing a video shot from the Lumia 920 to a video from an HTC 8X (another Windows 8 phone), one could clearly see the difference in the quality of recording. The stability of the video on the Nokia Lumia 920 is great.
The Smart Shoot feature is another aspect that deserves mention. It allows you to point the lens at one object while taking a photo and if other people tend to walk into the picture, you can edit them out. It’s worth noting that you don’t have to download any apps to use these features.
Cinemagraph: This is one feature of the Lumia 920 and 820 which adds to the fun quotient in the smartphone. Smartphones aren’t just about consuming, they are also about doing random, crazy stuff and this feature of the camera lets you do just that. Users can convert a picture into a GIF, by simply taking a still picture, and then animating parts of the image. This is seamless and integrated into your camera.
Microsoft Office: This is again a big positive feature in the smartphone. The fact that the app comes free and installed is good, especially for those who can’t give up Office. You can link it to SkyDrive and thus your other Word Documents as well. The fact that all features of Office from PowerPoint Presentation to Excel are available should make it appeal to those who constantly need access to their documents.
Typing is also easy, with the predictive text working admirably fast.
Sharing: This is the biggest negative. For example, while sharing a picture from the Nokia Lumia 920, via Bluetooth, the only share options visible are Messages and One Note. The phone that we were looking at may not have had all the apps installed but that fact that it only showed Bluetooth as a share option when Bluetooth was switched on, was frustrating.
In an Android, Bluetooth is always visible as a sharing option even if it is not on. One of the most prominent things on any Android or iOS device is the number of varied sharing options. The other part is that the share symbol is hardly prominent in Lumia devices. Hiding a symbol that a lot of people click on, almost as soon as they take a picture, is a big negative.
The Live Tiles are another feature that we’ve heard both Microsoft and Nokia go on and on about. The idea behind Live Tiles is that you can personalise them and both companies have been playing the “No more boring icons like Android and iOS” card. You can choose to make a particular tile big or small depending on how important it is to you. For instance, you can make WhatsApp very large and hide games if that’s what you want.
Except that this doesn’t really work as well as you’d think it would. If you click on a tile, a pop-up appears which allows you to stretch the tile. By instinct, you would want to stretch the expand icon as much as you can. But the truth is that there are only three default sizes.
Changing the size of Live Tiles can be a bit confusing, especially if you’re an extensive mobile web user, used to clicking on a space in-order to expand it. Personally, the Live Tile feature is something you can live without and the cleaner icon look that’s available on Android and iOS is certainly preferable.
So is the phone worth it? In terms of offering something new, Nokia’s Lumia 920 does that as far as hardware is concerned. The camera is excellent. However, does one secretly wish this phone had an Android OS? Well, sure, it won’t be the worst thing in the world.

GADGETS - I PHONE - iPhone5 Inspired Titanium Gray Galaxy S3 Released By Samsung

Galaxy S3

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 5 apparently has a strong influence on Samsung, as the Korean tech company announced plans for a titanium gray version of their flagship phone, Galaxy S III. This new model hits T-Mobile stores earlier this week.

The new version comes with 16GB of internal storage, Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean operating system, 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, 4.8 AMOLED HD display, NFC capabilities, and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The phone will sell for $279.99, after a mail-in rebate coupon for $50.00.
Brian White (analyst for Topeka Capital Markets) predicts  that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will release their next generation smartphone in six to eight different colors. That’s why they supposedly launched the fifth generation iPod Touch is many colors, they wanted to gauge the reactions of consumers before colorizing the next iPhone. Since it has proven to be successful, Apple will probably colorize the iPhone and the iPad next. He also predicts that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will introduce the iPhone in different sizes in order to appeal to all markets including the low-end markets. There has been some talk lately about Apple creating an iPhone Mini in hopes of securing a lead in the budget smartphone market. It’s been also predicted that the iPhone Mini could arrive as early as this summer.
To keep up with the competition, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) recently announced their plans to release abudget-friendly smartphone called Samsung S Galaxy II Plus. Yesterday, we reported that this new phone is essentially an enhanced version of the original Galaxy II, with hyperglazed plastic construction, 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2 GHz processor, and 8 megapixel back camera.  It also comes in two color choices white or dark blue.
The smartphone battle between Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) will continue to heat up as both companies continually release new smartphones and improve the ones they have on the market. 2013 could be a big year for smartphones

HEALTH - India celebrates two years of being polio-free

India celebrates two years of being polio-free
It's a rare moment of pride for India as it celebrates two years of being polio-free on Sunday. The drive against polio is considered to be one of the most effective public health campaigns launched in India and has started yielding positive results.
Two-year-old Rukhsaar from Howrah in West Bengal remains the last polio case detected in India in 2011. "I regret not getting my child vaccinated. Now, I tell other people not to make the same mistake," says Rukhsaar's father Abdul Shah.
In the last few years, India has mobilised 24 lakh volunteers and 1.5 lakh front line workers in an anti-polio effort that costs the government Rs 1,000 crore every year. More than 17 crore children are immunised in each national round of polio vaccination - held six to eight times a year. But experts warn against complacency - there's still a risk of the virus travelling to India from across the border. "Pakistan is still not polio-free and there is always a chance of importing polio to India. So, this is no time to grow complacent now," says WHO India representative Nata Manabde.
While Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries which have to still work on anti-polio efforts, India needs just one more year to stay off the list. India, however, tops the world's list for child mortality and millions of children die from completely preventable conditions, like diarrhoea, and pneumonia. The Pentavalent vaccine, which prevents children five life-threatening diseases, is only available in three states in the country. So, what the Indian government can do now is an immediate boost to its routine immunisation program.

BOLLYWOOD - ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ review: The Gulabi bhainsand Pankaj Kapur shine through a dull film

‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ review: The Gulabi <i>bhains</i> and Pankaj Kapur shine through a dull film
With the quirky title that it is bestowed with, ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ befits the category of a rustic comic caper. Sure, it does that but only in bits and pieces. It seems that ace film maker and music director Vishal Bhardwaj had the best possible resources to make his film except a sturdy script thereby making it score less in the quality department as compared to his other works.

The film opens to introduce Haripool aka Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapoor), a filthy rich and alcoholic builder and Matru (Imran Khan) who is following his family tradition of serving the Mandola family even after completing his education. The story is set up in a small village in Haryana named after the Mandola clan and centers around Harry and a vile politician Chaudhari Devi’s (Shabana Azmi) evil plans to usurp the fertile land owned by the village farmers for her personal gains. Also in the picture is Bijlee (Anushka Sharma) to add glamour and that much-needed spark to an otherwise dull film. Other characters who have added weight to the movie are Chaudhari Devi’s stupid son Badal (Arya Babbar) who wants to marry Bijlee to enjoy the property of the Mandolas and a Gulabi bhains (pink buffalo) which keeps appearing in the film every now and then to haunt Harry Mandola.

The movie barely manages to hold one’s attention in the first half owing to its slow narration but gathers pace only towards the fag end of the film. Comedy scenes are weaved into the tale but there are only a few sensible ones that truly manage to bring a broad smile. And ditto for the serious scenes too that were put to induce contemplation. The best part about the film is that the characters are sketched very nicely and the actors too have done their job in playing their parts. Also, the joke played on Navneet Nishan is worth underlining too. A fat Navneet has been made to wear a pink dress that is an allegory related to the Gulabi bhains.

Pankaj Kapoor as a drunkard Harry Mandola has delivered what is expected from a pro actor like him. He has well portrayed the shades of grey that his over ambitious character is rich with. And together with another maestro Shabana Azmi – Vishal Bhardwaj has proved that he knows how to choose villains for his films. Remember Saif Ali Khan in ‘Omkara’?

Anushka Sharma’s character has punk and glamour that we have seen even in her earlier films but even after proving her acting prowess in 6 odd films, this leggy actress is a feast for the eyes every time she comes on screen. Imran Khan has got his Haryanvi accent fairly right but there are times when he falters in that respect. There are even instances when he slips on from his rustic village man’s character to be the chocolate boy he is commonly known to be. All in all, Matru is not one of Imran’s best played roles and he still has a long road to go to reach that level.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s music is average and except the title track, there is nothing worth being all ears for. Besides that, the village landscape has been captured well by cinematographer Kartik Vijay making it all look appealing and real.

There is nothing out-of-the-box in ‘Matru Ki Bijee Ka Mandola’ except the Gulabi Bhains and honestly you won’t miss out on anything even if you give this film a miss!

TECHNOLOGY - New malware exploiting Java 7 in Windows and Unix systems

A new Trojan horse called Mal/JavaJar-B has been found that exploits a vulnerability in Oracle's Java 7 and affects even the latest version of the runtime (7u10).
The exploit has been described by Sophos as a zero-day attack since it has been found being actively used in malware before developers have had a chance to investigate and patch it. The exploit is currently under review at the National Vulnerability Database and has been given an ID number CVE-2013-0422, where it is still described as relatively unknown:
"Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Java 7 Update 10 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, possibly related to "permissions of certain Java classes," as exploited in the wild in January 2013, and as demonstrated by Blackhole and Nuclear Pack."
The malware has currently been seen attacking Windows, Linux and Unix systems, and while so far has not focused on OS X, may be able to do so given OS X is largely similar to Unix and Java is cross-platform. Additionally, the exploit is currently being distributed in the competing exploit kits "Blackhole" and "NuclearPack," making it far more convenient to criminal malware developers to use.
Even though the exploit has not been seen in OS X, Apple has taken steps to block it by issuing an update to its built-in XProtect system to block the current version of the Java 7 runtime and require users install an as of yet unreleased version of the Java runtime (release b19). Additionally, the U.S. Department of Defense has issued an advisory to disable Java on systems that have it installed.
Luckily with the latest versions of Java, users who need to keep it active can change a couple of settings to help secure their systems. Go to the Java Control Panel that is installed along with the runtime, and in the Security section uncheck the option to "Enable Java content in the browser," which will disable the browser plug-in. This will prevent the inadvertent execution of exploits that may be stumbled upon when browsing the Web, and is a recommended setting for most people to do. If you need to see a Java applet on the Web, then you can always temporarily re-enable the plug-in.
The second setting is to increase the security level of the Java runtime, which can also be done in the same Security section of the Java Control Panel. The default security level is Medium, but you can increase this to High or Very High. At the High level, Java will prompt you for approval before running any unsigned Java code, and at the Very High level all Java code will require such approval, regardless of whether or not it is signed.
Since this threat is Java-based, it will only affect systems that have Java installed. Most platforms do not come with Java, but if you have installed it and do not need or regularly use it, you might consider removing it from your system. While Java is convenient for legitimate developers, its conveniences also help malware developers spread their harmful practices to multiple platforms.
