TECH-Facebook to roll out new feature to make free voice calls

The feature is so far available only to iPhone users in Canada.
The feature to be introduced by Facebook will help users to make free internet voice calls, known as VoIP calls, to any friend on the social network.
According to the Daily Mail, the new feature comes at the same time as Facebook Messenger rolled out a new feature worldwide that allows users to record and send voicemail-type message to friends.
Working in a similar way to video messaging in the company’s Poke app, users press and hold a red record button, speak their message, and it appears in line as part of the conversation.
According to TechCrunch writer Josh Constine, there is a wide range of uses for the function, including messaging while driving to recording the waves lapping at a beach to send to friends.
However, its addition to the Messenger app seems merely to make it an ‘even more complete app’ he said, adding that he expects video messaging to soon be added as well.

To ensure safety for women in the coming year, readers write in with solutions using a combination of technology and community participation
The Delhi gang rape incident has shaken the conscience of the country. While government actions like nabbing the criminals and proposing steps like mandatory GPS devices in public transport, round the clock control room for women in distress and a woman IPS officer maintaining direct contact with the victim and her family are welcome, the awareness and anger generated in the public must be channelised to find a permanent solution to women harassment, because many such incidents in our country go unnoticed.
The solution lies in using technology with the participation of the community and the government. The strength of the 120-crore strong population is enough to make up for the shortage of resources to setup surveillance cameras at every nook and corner or police every neighbourhood.
A multifunctional knuckle stun-gun could be an answer to women’s safety in their daily lives. It can be worn on the fingers and so cannot be snatched easily; it is integrated with an alarm system and GPS, which sends the woman in distress’ geo-position to the police control room. A secure website run by National Informatics Centre with the essential details of a person like photograph, name, unique GPS number, address, emergency contact number is the second step.
If a woman travelling in public transport is approached by a person with malicious intent, she can press a button that sets the siren blaring and sends her GPS location to the police, who in turn can collect her details from the NIC website. In the meanwhile, she can temporarily immobilize the attacker with the knuckle stun-gun.
Using mobile phones could be another low-cost solution where the devices will be programmed such that on pressing a specific button, say #, a woman in distress can send her approximate location (the BTS location) to the police control room. If viable, the “woman in distress” message can be broadcasted to all mobile phone users in the BTS location. They can call a toll-free police control room number and give information of any suspicious activity reducing police reaction time further.
The cost of such infrastructure can be substantially reduced with mass procurement and government intervention, thus making it affordable for all sections of the society. This technology-based participative approach can also be used to deal with other crimes against vulnerable sections of the society like the elderly and the children.
The idea is that every criminal should know that women are not vulnerable and his crime would not go unnoticed. In the long term, we must stop female foeticide and infanticide, correct our skewed sex ratio which is leading to practices like molki where women are bought and sold. Such customs further debase the status of women in the society thereby increasing crimes against her.
A BBC had report found that women going for open defecation in rural India were being victimised. Hence, improving the sanitation scenario is another essential task. Last but not the least, there is a need to reinstall the social capital which has lost its way in our daily struggle because such crimes may seem to be isolated incidents but actually are an accumulation of our insensitivity. In a more every day example, do we even care about our fellow citizens – an old person trying to cross the road or a lady whose car is seized on the road? We are always more than ready to blame the government. However, a society gets what it deserves. Let us be more participative in our community life.

GADGETS - TABLETS-Aakash 3 may come with SIM slot, more exciting apps

PTI The Aakash 2 tablet is available for students at subsidised rate of Rs. 1,130. File Photo: Sushil Kumar VermaThe third version of low cost tablet ‘Aakash’ will be a delight for its users as developers are likely to equip it with a SIM slot and more exciting apps, all within the existing price band.
About 50 lakh ‘Aakash 3’ tablets are expected to be rolled out in the next phase, the global tender for which may be floated in February, 2013.
According to committee members engaged in developing the third version of Aakash, the endeavour will be to make the product as indigenous as possible and involve multiple vendors.
“Our ultimate aim is to imbibe the usage of tablets in the education system and create an ecosystem for this,” said Deepak B. Phatak, committee member and professor in IIT- Bombay’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
According to Mr. Phatak, computer giants world over are amazed with the device and there is a keen interest among several vendors to participate in this venture.
Aakash 3 will have a faster processor supporting both Linux and Android operating systems and come with advanced memory, he said.
“It could also have a SIM card slot so that people can use it as a communication device,” Mr. Phatak said.
Apart from Mr. Phatak, Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT-Madras along with hundreds of students and other partners are also involved in making the new Aakash 3.
One of the aims of students involved in the project is to develop an application for the tablet that can tell pulse rate among many others.
It will also have a larger distribution and servicing system so that owners can get their tablets repaired locally.
Playing down controversies suggesting that several of the tablet’s components were of Chinese make, Mr. Phatak said emphasis has been placed on adding value to the product with the objective of enhancing its efficacy among students.
He also suggested two models for Aakash 3 — one for schools and the other for colleges.
The most recent version, Aakash 2, developed by IIT-Bombay along with C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing), was launched by President Pranab Mukherjee in November.
The tablet is available for students at subsidised rate of Rs. 1,130 while the government purchases it at Rs. 2,263.

30 Christhians from 8 families returns to Hinduism.

Mumbai : It was a moment of pride for all of them who returned to Hinduism  here on Sunday.( 26th June 11 ) All of those who reconverted back to Hinduism belong to extremely poor strata of society made this decision  after they failed to achieve equal social status in the faith which was introduced to them by their mentors who once came to them as saviours in white cloak. The programme was organized at Wageshwari devi temple at Filmcity road in Goregaon East,Mumbai by VISHWA HINDU PARISHAD (VHP) under the vibrant leadership of   Shri Anand Kumar Pande (VHP District secretary) who showed all of them the path to return to religion of their forefathers.
Every one had their own stories of fraud & deception. Cabral now Kannan Swami narrated his pathetic tale who was converted to Christianity around 12 years back by New Life fellowship church, who converted as his wife was unable to bear child & Pastor Immanuel promised him that his wife will conceive if he brings his belief in Jesus Christ which he did. But still after conversion his wife could not concieve & finally he adopted a girl child. The worst thing came when his Aunt expired & he called Pastor to perform the final rites as per Christian faith but he never turned up,desparately he ran to a Roman Catholic Church near locality but the watchman at graveyard turned him away saying that only Catholics could be buried there & finally without any option his Aunt was cremated as per Hindu Rites. Similar story is of Rusi now Sharda who was baptized by Eternal life fellowship church 15 years back saying that she would get a job which never fulfilled. One Kondiba Gaikwad was baptized to Christianity in year 1981 when he was just 14 years old,all he remembers is his father was given a bicycle in Udgir in Latur District Maharashtra. As saying “ I Spent nearly 30 years in Christainity but I always had a simmering wish to become a Hindu one day which got fulfilled today & I am thankful to Shri Anand Kumar Pande (VHP District Secretary) & VHP who gave me this opportunity. All of them were relieved to come back home. A Yagna was organized by the VHP & Bajrang Dal Unit of Dindoshi District which all of them performed after which all of the families were provided with Photos of lord Shiva & Krishna & new clothes.
When commenting the VHP District Secretary Shri Anand Kumar Pande  said that  “ It was our moral duty to bring these poor & innocent people back home who were deceived  by the people known for their crafty designs. “

HEALTH-How Indian Doctors.

Most of these observations are either completely or partially true. Corruption has many names, and one of civil society isn't innocent either. Professionals and businessmen of various sorts indulge in unscrupulous practices. I recently had a chat with some doctors, surgeons and owners of nursing homes about the tricks of their trade. Here is what they said.

1)      40-60% kickbacks for lab tests. When a doctor (whether family doctor / general physician, consultant or surgeon) prescribes tests - pathology, radiology, X-rays, MRIs etc. - the laboratory conducting those tests gives commissions. In South and Central Mumbai -- 40%. In the suburbs north of Bandra -- a whopping 60 per cent! He probably earns a lot more in this way than
the consulting fees that you pay.

2)      30-40% for referring to consultants, specialists & surgeons. When your friendly GP refers you to a specialist or surgeon, he gets 30-40%.

3)      30-40% of total hospital charges. If the GP or consultant recommends hospitalization, he will receive kickback from the private nursing home as a percentage of all charges including ICU, bed, nursing care, surgery.

4)      Sink tests. Some tests prescribed by doctors are not needed. They are there to inflate bills and commissions. The pathology lab understands what is unnecessary. These are called "sink tests"; blood, urine, stool samples collected will be thrown.

5)      Admitting the patient to "keep him under observation". People go to cardiologists feeling unwell and anxious. Most of them aren't really having a heart attack, and cardiologists and family doctors are well aware of this. They admit such safe patients, put them on a saline drip with mild sedation, and send them home after 3-4 days after charging them a fat amount for ICU, bed charges, visiting doctors fees.
6)      ICU minus intensive care. Nursing homes all over the suburbs are run by doctor couples or as one-man-shows. In such places, nurses and ward boys are 10th cl-ass drop-outs in ill-fitting uniforms and bare feet. These "nurses" sit at the reception counter, give injections and saline drips, perform ECGs, apply dressings and change bandages, and assist in the operation theatre. At night, they even sit outside the Intensive Care Units; there is no resident doctor. In case of a crisis, the doctor -- who usually lives in the same building -- will turn up after 20 minutes, after this nurse calls him. Such ICUs admit safe patients to fill up beds. Genuine patients who require emergency care are sent elsewhere to hospitals having a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) round-the-clock.

7)      Unnecessary caesarean surgeries and hysterectomies. Many surgical procedures are done to keep the cash register ringing. Caesarean deliveries and hysterectomy (removal of uterus) are high on the list. While the woman with labour -pains is screaming and panicking, the obstetrician who gently suggests that caesarean is best seems like an angel sent by God! Menopausal women experience bodily changes that make them nervous and gullible. They can be frightened by words like " and "fibroids" that are in almost every normal woman's radiology reports. When a gynaecologist gently suggests womb removal "as a precaution", most women and their husbands agree without a second's thought.

8)      Cosmetic surgery advertized through newspapers. Liposuction and plastic surgery are not minor procedures. Some are life-threateningly major. But advertisements make them appear as easy as facials and waxing. The Indian medical council has strict rules against such misrepresentation. But nobody is interested in taking action.
9)       Indirect kickbacks from doctors to prestigious hospitals. To be on the panel of a prestigious hospital, there is give-and-take involved. The hospital expects the doctor to refer many patients for hospital admission. If he fails to send a certain number of patients, he is quietly dumped. And so he likes to admit patients even when there is no need.
10)  "Emergency surgery" on dead body. If a surgeon hurriedly wheels your patient from the Intensive Care Unit to the operation theatre, refuses to let you go inside and see him, and wants your signature on the consent form for "an emergency operation to save his life", it is likely that your patient is already dead. The "emergency operation" is for inflating the bill; if you agree for it, the surgeon will come out 15 minutes later and report that your patient died on the operation table. And then, when you take  delivery of the dead body, you will pay OT charges, anaesthesiologist's charges, blah-blah-
Doctors are humans too. You can't trust them blindly. Please understand the difference.
Young surgeons and old ones. The young ones who are setting up nursing home etc. have heavy loans to settle. To pay back the loan, they have to perform as many operations as possible. Also, to build a reputation, they have to perform a large number of operations and develop their skills. So, at first, every case seems fit for cutting. But with age, experience and prosperity, many surgeons lose their taste for cutting, and stop recommending operations.
Physicians and surgeons. To a man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Surgeons like to solve medical problems by cutting, just as physicians first seek solutions with drugs. So, if you take your medical problem to a surgeon first, the chances are that you will unnecessarily end up on the operation table. Instead, please go to an ordinary GP first.
