When one thinks of a $99 tablet then one always thinks of Asus, because of the fact they launched the Nexus 7 with Google, which broke ground in the $199 price bracket. That said WSJ believes that Acer is planning a $99 Android tablet and is also working on a cheap Windows 8 tablet.
Only recently, some pictures popped up on a Serbian forum and WSJ has confirmed that the images are of the $99 Acer tablet. The tablet is rumored to feature a 7-inch display with a resolution 1024×600 pixels and a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz.
Additionally, a couple of days ago two Asus tablets were leaked and one of them had a rumored price range of $130 and are expected to be seen at CES, so this market is definitely heating up.
Acer for its part was actually one of the first OEMs to announce a tablet based on Nvidia’s low cost Kai program, but it missed the $199 price point. This may be Acer’s second attempt at reinventing the low-cost tablet market and considering Google definitely wants to bring the points lower, as a $99 tablet could work wonders for Acer. The Nexus 7 has already done very well for Asus and a $99 tablet will further bring down the entry point to owning a tablet made by a global OEM.
On the Windows 8 front Acer believes its current offering are expensive, and a similar strategy could work even in the Windows environment.
